A slip and fall at work can feel “not that bad” in the moment, especially if you pop up quickly, finish your shift, and assume you just bruised something. Then 24–72 hours later, your hip feels tight, your knee aches on stairs, or your low back locks up when you try to get out of the car.

If you’re in Everett or Snohomish County (Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Mill Creek, Marysville, etc.), this delayed pain pattern is one of the most common work-injury complaints we see in chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage therapy. Here’s why it happens—and what to do next.

Slip, Trip, and Fall Injuries Are Very Common

Workplace falls aren’t rare, and they often lead to time off work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 479,480 cases involving days away from work related to falls, slips, and trips (2023–2024 DAFW cases).

On the fatal side, BLS also reported 844 fatal work-related injuries from falls, slips, and trips in 2024.

In other words: even when a fall seems “minor,” it’s a major driver of real injuries.

Why Pain Can Show Up Days Later

1) Adrenaline masks symptoms

Right after a fall, your nervous system is in “protect and move” mode. Adrenaline and stress hormones can temporarily dull pain signals, so you may not feel the full impact until later that evening or the next day.

2) Your body tenses to protect you

After a slip, your body often goes into automatic “save the fall” mode—arms flail, the hip twists, the knee catches, and the low back stiffens. Those protective reflexes can cause:

Muscle strains (low back, glutes, hip flexors)

Joint irritation (SI joint, hip, knee)

Tendon overload (hamstring, quad, patellar tendon)

The soreness that shows up later is often your body saying, “That was a bigger event than you thought.”

3) Most workplace falls are “same level” falls

Many workplace injuries are not just ladder falls. They’re slips on wet floors, uneven mats, clutter, or awkward pivots while carrying something. CDC/NIOSH notes that the highest counts of nonfatal fall injuries occur in certain industries and are mostly slips and falls on the same level.

Same-level falls often create twisting and impact forces that hit the hip, knee, and low back hard.

4) Inflammation has a delayed timeline

Inflammation ramps up over hours. That’s why people commonly feel “fine” after the fall, then wake up stiff and sore the next morning, or feel worse on day 2.

These are red-flag-free but still important symptoms that often benefit from evaluation:

Hip pain when walking, getting in/out of a car, or turning in bed

Knee pain on stairs, squatting, or after sitting

Low back pain with bending, lifting, or standing too long

Tailbone soreness (especially if you landed seated)

Tightness in glutes/hamstrings that feels like “pulling”

A limp or uneven stride that wasn’t there before

These patterns matter because walking differently for even a few days can create secondary pain in the back, hip, or opposite knee.

What to Do in the First 72 Hours

If you’ve had a slip and fall at work in Everett or nearby:

Document symptoms early
Even if pain is mild, write down where you hurt and what movements trigger it.

Move gently, don’t “bed rest”
Short walks, light range-of-motion, and avoiding prolonged sitting usually beat total rest for most strains and joint irritation.

Avoid aggressive stretching into sharp pain
Stretching can help later, but early on it’s easy to overdo it and irritate tissue.

Get checked if symptoms worsen, spread, or don’t improve
Especially if you notice radiating pain, increasing swelling, instability, or significant movement loss.

Washington State L&I publishes injury data tools that track workers’ comp claims and injury patterns statewide, underscoring how common and costly work injuries can be over time.

How PT, Chiropractic, and Massage Therapy Help Work Fall Injuries

A good work-injury plan should do two things:

help you feel better now, and

help you move well enough that the injury doesn’t linger.

Physical therapy

Often focuses on:

restoring normal walking mechanics

improving hip/knee stability

rebuilding strength safely (especially for return-to-work demands)

Chiropractic care

Often focuses on:

restoring motion in stiff spinal or pelvic joints

reducing mechanical irritation that can keep the low back “stuck”

Massage therapy

Often helps with:

calming protective muscle guarding

improving comfort so you can move normally again

In an integrated clinic, these approaches can complement each other—especially when the injury involves both impact (bruise/joint irritation) and strain (tight, reactive muscles).

When to Seek an Evaluation

Consider booking an evaluation if:

pain lasts more than 7–10 days

walking feels uneven or you’re limping

knee feels unstable, swollen, or “catches”

hip pain interrupts sleep or stairs

low back pain is worsening or spreading

And if your fall involved a ladder, it’s worth taking seriously even if you feel okay. Washington resources commonly highlight ladder falls as a recurring source of serious work injuries.

Local Next Step

If you’ve had a slip and fall at work in Everett, early care can help prevent that “minor fall” from turning into weeks of hip, knee, and low back pain. We serve patients across Snohomish County, including Lynnwood, Mukilteo, and Mill Creek, with coordinated physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage therapy.

March in Everett and Snohomish County usually means more walking, spring cleaning, yard work, and getting back into weekend activities. It also means a spike in the exact aches people tend to google: back pain, neck stiffness, shoulder tightness, and headaches from tension.

The good news: most March flare-ups are predictable and very treatable with the right mix of chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, and smart at-home habits.

Why March Triggers More Back and Neck Pain

Even if you didn’t “hurt yourself,” March has a few common patterns that lead to pain:

Sudden activity jumps: weekend projects after a winter lull load your joints and tissues fast

Cold, tight muscles: your body still moves like it’s winter, even if your schedule says spring

More sitting plus more doing: desk posture during the week, then lifting and moving on weekends

Old injuries wake up: previous car accidents, sports strains, or “I tweaked it years ago” issues can flare when activity changes

Back pain is extremely common and often shows up with everyday activities like bending, lifting, and prolonged sitting, which is why these seasonal shifts hit so hard. Source: NIH (NIAMS) back pain overview.

The Most Common March Pain Patterns We See

1) Low back pain after lifting, yard work, or spring cleaning

A classic setup is bending plus twisting plus lifting (bags of soil, storage bins, laundry baskets, kids). Your spine and hips can usually handle load, but they don’t love awkward angles or sudden volume.

Quick at-home reset:

Use a hip hinge when you lift (push hips back like closing a car door)

Keep the item close to your body

Exhale during the effort (avoid holding your breath and straining)

If low back pain keeps returning, a combined approach often works best:

Chiropractic care can help restore motion in stiff segments and reduce “locked up” feeling

Physical therapy can retrain safer lifting mechanics and core control

Massage therapy can reduce muscle guarding so you move more naturally

2) Neck stiffness and headaches from desk posture

If your head drifts forward, neck and upper-back muscles work overtime. Many people don’t realize how much screen height, chair setup, and keyboard/mouse position matter until symptoms start.

Two simple fixes:

Raise your screen so the top third is closer to eye level

Do gentle chin tucks (like a small double-chin) for 5 reps, 2–3 times per day

For a simple, credible workstation posture guide, OSHA’s computer workstation eTool is a great reference:

3) Shoulder pain from spring projects and sports

Painting, raking, cleaning, and returning to golf or tennis can irritate the shoulder, especially if the upper back is stiff or the rotator cuff is overloaded. The shoulder is complex, so repetitive overhead work can trigger multiple common issues. Source: AAOS OrthoInfo shoulder pain overview.

Helpful habit:
Before activity, do 30–60 seconds of arm circles plus shoulder blade squeezes. Warm tissue handles load better.

Why Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, and Massage Often Work Better Together

If you’re searching for an Everett chiropractor but also want lasting results, it helps to think in roles:

Chiropractic care

Best for improving joint motion and reducing stiffness in the neck, mid-back, low back, and pelvis.

Physical therapy

Best for building strength, stability, balance, and movement habits so symptoms don’t keep returning, especially for recurring back pain, shoulder issues, and post-injury recovery.

Massage therapy

Best for relieving tight muscles, improving comfort, supporting recovery, and reducing stress-related tension that can keep pain “stuck.”

This lines up well with mainstream ergonomics and musculoskeletal injury prevention guidance from CDC/NIOSH, which emphasizes reducing strain and improving how the body handles repetitive or heavy demands:

A Simple March Movement Plan (5–10 minutes)

Do this 4–5 days per week to keep your back and neck happier:

1 minute: brisk walk around the house (warm-up)

1 minute: cat-cow stretch (easy spinal motion)

1 minute: hip hinge practice (10 slow reps)

1 minute: doorway chest stretch (opens shoulders)

1 minute: chin tucks plus shoulder blade squeezes

1–2 minutes: gentle glute bridges (10 reps)

Consistency matters more than intensity.

When You Should Get Checked Out

Book an evaluation if you notice:

Pain lasting more than 7–10 days

Pain that keeps returning with the same triggers

Numbness, tingling, or radiating pain into the arm/hand or leg/foot

Weakness, balance changes, or pain that’s getting worse

You’re avoiding activity because you don’t trust your back/neck

FAQ: Chiropractic, PT, and Massage in Everett, WA

Can a chiropractor help with back pain and sciatica?

Chiropractic care often helps by improving joint motion and reducing stiffness that can aggravate back pain. If symptoms include sciatica, many patients do best with a combined plan that also includes physical therapy to improve strength and movement patterns.

Do I need physical therapy for whiplash after a car accident?

Whiplash commonly benefits from guided rehabilitation, especially when symptoms linger beyond a few days. PT focuses on restoring normal range of motion, improving stability, and gradually returning you to normal activity. Many patients also benefit from chiropractic care and massage therapy for mobility and soft-tissue tension.

How long should I wait before coming in for neck or back pain?

If pain is mild and improving, a few days of gentle movement may be enough. If pain lasts more than 7–10 days, keeps returning, or affects sleep/work/activities, it’s smart to get evaluated sooner.

What’s the difference between massage therapy and physical therapy?

Massage therapy focuses on soft tissue tension, soreness, and recovery support. Physical therapy focuses on correcting movement, building strength/stability, and reducing recurrence. They often complement each other well.

Can you help with work injuries and occupational injuries?

Yes. Many work injuries involve repetitive strain, lifting mechanics, posture demands, and overuse. A coordinated plan can address pain relief plus movement training so you can return to work with more confidence and fewer flare-ups.

Does chiropractic care help with headaches from tension?

Many tension-type headaches are linked to neck and upper-back stiffness plus muscle tightness. Chiropractic care may help mobility, while massage therapy can reduce muscular tension, and PT can address posture and endurance for long-term prevention.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

They’re different approaches. Dry needling is commonly used in rehab settings to target muscle trigger points and reduce tension. If you’re considering it, ask what it’s being used for and how it fits into your overall plan.

What areas do you serve near Everett?

Many patients come from Everett, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Mill Creek, and nearby Snohomish County communities for chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage therapy—especially for auto injury and work injury rehab.

February in Everett and Snohomish County is peak “hunched season.” Cold mornings, rainy commutes, more time indoors, and long hours at a desk can quietly stack up—until you realize you’re dealing with nagging neck tightness, upper back stiffness, tension headaches, or even tingling into the shoulders and arms.

The good news: posture-related pain is often very treatable. At an Everett chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage therapy clinic, we see this pattern constantly—especially from patients in Everett, Mill Creek, Lynnwood, Bothell, Mukilteo, and surrounding areas who sit for work, drive long distances, or spend evenings on the couch scrolling.

Why February makes posture pain worse

A few seasonal factors tend to amplify “tech neck” and desk-related strain:

Cold-weather guarding: When you’re chilly, your shoulders rise and your neck muscles brace. That tension can become your new normal.

Less movement: Fewer walks and outdoor activities = stiffer joints and tighter soft tissue.

More screen time: Winter evenings often mean more phone, laptop, gaming, or TV time—usually with a forward head posture.

Stress + sleep changes: Busy schedules, short daylight hours, and stress can tighten the jaw/neck/upper traps and contribute to headaches.

Common symptoms we see from desk posture

If you’re in Snohomish County and noticing any of these, posture strain may be the culprit:

Neck stiffness or limited range of motion

Tight shoulders or “knots” in the upper traps

Upper back pain between the shoulder blades

Tension headaches (often starting at the base of the skull)

Jaw tension, clenching, or TMJ irritation

Numbness/tingling down the arm (from irritated nerves or tight muscles)

Pain that flares after driving, working, or scrolling

When posture pain isn’t “just posture”

Sometimes people assume they simply need a new pillow or a better chair. Those can help, but if symptoms are persistent, it often means the body needs more than a quick fix.

You should consider an evaluation if:

Pain lasts more than 7–10 days

You feel tingling, numbness, weakness, or radiating pain

You’re avoiding normal activities because it “flares everything up”

Your neck pain started after a minor injury, fall, or fender bender

How chiropractic care helps posture-related pain

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring joint mobility—especially in the neck and upper back—so your body can move normally again.

When the spine isn’t moving well, nearby muscles often tighten to stabilize, and posture tends to collapse. Chiropractic adjustments can help by:

Improving mobility in the cervical spine (neck) and thoracic spine (upper back)

Reducing stiffness that contributes to headaches and upper back pain

Supporting better alignment and movement mechanics

Helping your nervous system “downshift” out of constant tension

How physical therapy helps you keep the results

If chiropractic “opens the door,” physical therapy helps you walk through it—and stay there.

Physical therapy for posture problems commonly includes:

Deep neck flexor strengthening (the muscles that support neutral head posture)

Scapular stability and upper back strengthening

Mobility work for the thoracic spine

Shoulder mechanics retraining (especially for desk workers)

A home plan that fits real life (not a 45-minute routine you’ll never do)

This is especially helpful if you’re dealing with recurring pain, weakness, or symptoms that keep coming back after stressful weeks.

How massage therapy fits in

Massage is often the missing piece when you’re stuck in tightness.

Desk posture pain tends to overload:

Upper traps

Suboccipitals (base of skull muscles linked to headaches)

Massage therapy can help by:

Releasing trigger points and muscle guarding

If you’ve been dealing with stubborn neck tension, low back tightness, or that “knot” that never fully lets go, you’ve probably seen dry needling pop up in physical therapy clinics around Everett, Snohomish, Mukilteo, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Marysville, and Lake Stevens.

Dry needling can be a powerful tool—but it’s not the same as acupuncture, and it’s not always the best first option. Here’s a practical 2026 guide to what dry needling is good for, how it compares, and how we typically combine it with physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage therapy for the fastest relief.

What is dry needling (in plain English)?

Dry needling uses a thin, sterile “filiform” needle to stimulate tight muscle bands and trigger points (often called “knots”) to reduce pain and improve movement. In Washington, it’s commonly referred to as intramuscular needling, and PTs need an endorsement to perform it.

What dry needling is good for (common reasons people in Everett book it)

Dry needling is most often used for neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement issues, especially when muscle tightness is limiting function. Research reviews and PT resources commonly highlight benefits like short-term pain reduction and improved mobility for certain conditions.

In real life, we often see it help with:

Neck pain and “tech-neck” tension (desk work, long commutes)

Shoulder pain (especially rotator cuff irritation + tight upper traps)

Headache patterns tied to neck/upper back muscle tension

Low back tightness with restricted motion

Hip tightness (hip flexors, glutes, deep rotators)

Calf/hamstring tightness in active people and weekend warriors

Postural overload from lifting, childcare, or repetitive work tasks

Dry needling vs acupuncture: the key difference

They can look similar because both use thin needles, but they’re built on different frameworks:

Dry needling targets muscular trigger points and is typically used inside a rehab plan (strength, mobility, posture, return-to-sport/work).

Acupuncture comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and is often used for broader wellness goals, symptom modulation, and systemic concerns (varies by provider).

If your main goal is movement + function (lifting, running, sleeping without shoulder pain, turning your head comfortably), dry needling is often chosen as a rehab “accelerator.” If your goal is more whole-body regulation (stress, sleep, generalized discomfort), acupuncture may be a better fit depending on your needs and preferences.

Dry needling vs massage therapy: which works better?

This is the “vs something” comparison most patients actually care about.

Choose massage therapy when you want to reduce overall muscle guarding, improve circulation, and downshift your nervous system—especially if you’re stressed, sore, or you want full-body relief.

Choose dry needling when there’s a specific “hot spot” or trigger point that keeps reactivating, or when a tight muscle is blocking progress in PT.

Many people do best with both, because massage prepares tissue and calms the system, while dry needling can help reset stubborn trigger points—then PT locks in the change with movement retraining.

Where chiropractic care and PT fit in (especially for recurring pain)

If pain keeps coming back, it usually means the body is compensating—often due to joint restriction, weak stabilizers, or repetitive strain. That’s where combo care shines:

Chiropractic adjustments can help restore joint motion and reduce mechanical stress.

Physical therapy builds strength, mobility, and control so the problem doesn’t return.

Massage therapy helps reduce tone, improve recovery, and support stress-related tension patterns.

Dry needling can be the “shortcut” that reduces pain enough to move better and rehab faster.

Safety and what to look for in Washington (2026)

Dry needling is considered a skilled procedure. In Washington State, PTs can perform intramuscular needling/dry needling with the appropriate endorsement.

When you’re choosing a provider, ask:

Are you endorsed/credentialed to perform intramuscular needling in WA?

How do you screen for risk factors (blood thinners, pregnancy, infection, medical complexity)?

How do you pair needling with rehab so results last?

Also know: mild soreness or bruising can happen; more serious complications are rare but part of why training and technique matter. (mdpi)

What to expect at your visit

A typical plan looks like:

movement and pain assessment

dry needling to key trigger points (if appropriate)

immediate mobility/activation work (so your body “learns” the new range)

a simple home plan (2–3 moves) to keep results between visits

When dry needling might NOT be the best choice

Dry needling may not be ideal if you:

have significant needle anxiety

have an active infection or skin irritation at the area

are on certain medications (especially if bruising/bleeding risk is high)

are dealing with pain that’s primarily from a non-muscular cause (needs evaluation)

Local takeaway for Everett-area patients

If you’re in Everett or nearby (Snohomish County and north Seattle suburbs) and dealing with recurring tightness or pain, dry needling can be extremely helpful—especially when it’s not used as a standalone fix, but as part of a plan that includes PT, chiropractic care, and/or massage therapy.
The post Dry Needling vs Acupuncture (and Massage): What It’s Good For in 2026 — Everett, WA Guide first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.

In the spring and summertime, several types of sports injuries are relatively common due to increased outdoor activities and participation in various sports. That can be anything from soccer and softball, to cycling and golf. Even partaking in things that might seem less strenuous like hiking or jogging could lead to potential injuries.

Preventing sports and outdoor activity injuries is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Warm-up and Stretching:

Prior to engaging in any sports or outdoor activities, it’s essential to warm up your body and stretch your muscles. A proper warm-up increases blood flow to the muscles, making them more flexible and less prone to injury. Start with light aerobic exercises like jogging or jumping jacks, followed by dynamic stretches that mimic the movements you’ll be performing. Focus on stretching all major muscle groups, paying extra attention to areas specific to your activity. Remember to hold each stretch for 15 to 30 seconds without bouncing, as bouncing can cause muscle strain.

Use Proper Technique and Protective Equipment:

Another vital aspect of injury prevention is using proper technique and wearing appropriate protective equipment. Whether you’re playing a team sport, cycling, or engaging in other activities, learning and practicing correct techniques significantly reduces the risk of injury. Seek guidance from experienced coaches or instructors who can teach you the right form and technique for your chosen activity. Additionally, always wear the necessary protective gear such as helmets, mouthguards, goggles, knee pads, or appropriate footwear. The equipment should fit well and be in good condition to provide adequate protection.

Remember that these preventive measures are general guidelines, and it’s important to consider individual factors such as age, fitness level, and any pre-existing conditions. If you have specific concerns or questions about injury prevention for a particular activity, it’s advisable to consult with a sports medicine professional or a qualified instructor who can provide tailored advice and recommendations.

Doctors are a vital part of the fabric of society and the health care plan of many individuals. Of course, there isn’t a single doctor that treats every ailment or issue. Many doctors specialize in one area or system of the body. You can see a cardiologist for your heart, and a neurologist for your nervous system or brain, but what about your bones and ligaments?

A general doctor can diagnose a tear or a break and a surgeon can mend those breaks and tears. But there are a lot of issues between those extremes. Joint and ligament pain or discomfort is a real issue for many, and a chiropractor might just be the best bet for treatment and long-term maintenance.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractic care can be a little unclear, especially for those who haven’t been through treatment before. Chiropractors have both a limited and wide-reaching scope of their specialty.

Chiropractors focus on a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal health – including bones, nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Back and neck pain is some of the most common complaints brought to chiropractors. This kind of pain often comes from the misalignment of bones and/or tendons and ligaments. Realigning these elements through spinal adjustment can improve the overall function of a body and improve the body’s ability to self-heal.

Additionally, treatment through a chiropractor can also include elements of nutrition and fitness. The kind of treatment and length of treatment depends greatly on the patient. The scope of treatment often includes a health and functional review, an examination, a treatment plan, and monitoring progress.

How do chiropractors help?

The biggest reason people see, and continue seeing, a chiropractor is for pain management. An adjustment from the chiropractor can do much more than lessening that low back pain. Chiropractors are pros when it comes to treating and limiting pain without traditional medications

The truth is, however, that chiropractic treatment has other a chiropractor. The power of a good chiropractor can impact many parts of your life for years to come.

Top Benefits for Seeing a Chiropractor

Chiropractors may treat many root causes of chronic and episodic pain. Based on a number of different studies, chiropractors are one of the leaders in treating both back and neck pain. In fact, people who consistently see a chiropractor report less pain after just six weeks in research published in 2018.

Chronic pain in other parts of the body is just as responsive to chiropractic treatment. Chronic pain is often caused by elements of inflammation and tense muscles. Chiropractors may be able to target these issues to help reduce pain.

Many high-performance athletes use and swear by chiropractors. Regular adjustments can mean better alignment and a higher level of performance. Not everyone is a world-class athlete, but we can all stand to move a little better. Treatment with a chiropractor may also help increase energy levels.

Chiropractors are known for their ability to relieve pain and improve quality of life. People flock to the closest office when back or neck pain rears its head. Even if you aren’t feeling those tell-tell signs of pain or discomfort, it can still be time to visit the local chiropractor.

If you’re working from home or in an office setting, your body will be happier if you construct an ergonomically correct workspace. The goal of ergonomics is to fit the worker’s environment to the worker, and this process will increase productivity and reduce back, neck, wrist, and shoulder strain.

Ideally, if you have the luxury of choosing your office set-up space, try to locate it in an area with good lighting, adequate power outlets, strong internet connections, and privacy. Having a reasonable distance to work and move around will be very useful for mapping out proper furniture and equipment placement for your work tasks.

Furniture

Desk heights should be between 25 and 30 inches. Guidelines for desk heights are pretty flexible, depending on your height. Also, you can raise or lower some motorized desks to accommodate standing or sitting while you work.

Depending on your height, size, and body shape, you can locate an office chair that is your perfect match. Office chair heights are usually between 16 and 20 inches, with a seat depth of 17 to 24 inches, but there is no limit to the type or size of available desk chairs. Allow your feet to rest flat on the floor with your hips and knees at a 90-degree angle.

The chair’s backrest must provide comfortable and adequate lumbar support, and accessories of a lumbar roll may be necessary to relieve low back strain.

You can adjust the armrests on your chair to support your forearms when you bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle. Armrests are essential to allow your arms, shoulders, and neck to rest while your work is in process.

Equipment

You may not have the option of choosing your computer and monitor type, but the keyboard and monitor placement is valuable.

With your head and neck straight and your shoulders relaxed, make sure the monitor is about an arm’s length away and your eye level is at or below the top of the monitor.

Keyboards that allow the most neutral position of your wrists and hands will do the most to reduce pain or fatigue. To avoid injuries like Carpal tunnel syndrome, pay attention to your keyboard type and placement.

If you are using a laptop with a touchpad or a standard mouse, the stress on the muscles in your fingers and wrists may cause severe discomfort. If you are feeling any kind of hand fatigue, experiment with a mouse that has a comfortable grip and maneuvers smoothly.

After all, back pain affects 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. The pain can be dull and constant or sudden and sharp. Needless to say, those who suffer from chronic pain seek relief wherever and however they can. Treatments vary depending on your condition, and they may include the use of over-the-counter pain relievers, rest, surgery, injections and chiropractic help.

Lifestyle changes like adding an exercise regimen to one's schedule may help prevent back pain. You may have heard that yoga can help with back pain. But did you know that tai chi, a Chinese martial art, also is making a mark in medical community regarding back pain?

A recently published systematic review and meta-analysis concludes that Tai Chi alone or as additional therapy for low back pain, "may decrease pain and improve function disability for patients with LBP."

In 2017 The American College of Physicians recommended that "physicians and patients initially select non-drug therapy with exercise, multidisciplinary rehabilitation, acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction, tai chi, yoga, motor control exercise (MCE), progressive relaxation, electromyography biofeedback, low level laser therapy, operant therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or spinal manipulation."

This Consumer Reports article dives further into this suggestion with their own survey of more than 3,500 people who confirmed that tai chi helped provide relief from back pain. "Nearly 90 percent of respondents who used tai chi for back pain (or yoga or a similar exercise) found it helpful."

As you can see, there is mounting information indicating that therapies such as Tai Chi may be a helpful against chronic low back pain.

Read more here for additional insight and three Tai Chi moves to try out yourself. Of course you should consult with your physician before trying any new practice or exercise first.

The term “chiropractor” is derived from the Greek word for hand (“cheir”) and “praktos” which means “done.” From that description, one can glean that chiropractor medicine is one that is done by hands. More specifically, chiropractors utilize spinal manipulation and adjustments to the joints and tissues, meant to help treat musculoskeletal (i.e. back pain, neck pain) other a variety of health issues.

Spinal adjustments have been shown to improve immune function

It’s drug-free and non-invasive. The American College of Physicians released an update in 2017 to its low back pain treatment guideline that recommends first using non-drug treatments, such as spinal manipulation (a centerpiece of chiropractic care), for acute and chronic low back pain.

It’s not limited to adults—kids can get chiropractic treatment, too

It may help with surgery prevention

You may experience improved sleep

Back adjustments. You’ve come across this term several times, but what exactly is one? When someone refers to a back adjustment, what they are specifically describing is what’s called a “chiropractic adjustment” (or spinal adjustment).

This is a kind of spinal manipulation that chiropractors perform on patients in order to treat various spine-related ailments. A trained chiropractor will use their hands or a tool to physically apply controlled pressure to the spine to correct or adjust the vertebrae. People will seek adjustments for things such as: back pain, headaches, scoliosis, whiplash, neck pain or for preventative care. Chiropractic adjustments involve no drugs and can be a complementary treatment–certainly an alternative to patients seeking non-invasive treatments. Another bonus is it generally does not take very long to complete an adjustment session.

Does the patient see immediate results? Depending on the individual, multiple sessions may be required to see improvement and may even be spread out over weeks or months. Some people may see results the same day–it all really depends. Adjustments may not be suitable for everyone. If you are unsure, please give us a call and one of our staff members can assist you. You may also drop-in our Everett office (right on the border of Mill Creek and Lynnwood) located at 927 128th St SW Ste B, Everett, WA 98204. We are open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6pm.
The post What is a Back Adjustment and Why Do I Need One? first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.
