A slip and fall at work can feel “not that bad” in the moment, especially if you pop up quickly, finish your shift, and assume you just bruised something. Then 24–72 hours later, your hip feels tight, your knee aches on stairs, or your low back locks up when you try to get out of the car.

If you’re in Everett or Snohomish County (Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Mill Creek, Marysville, etc.), this delayed pain pattern is one of the most common work-injury complaints we see in chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage therapy. Here’s why it happens—and what to do next.

Slip, Trip, and Fall Injuries Are Very Common

Workplace falls aren’t rare, and they often lead to time off work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 479,480 cases involving days away from work related to falls, slips, and trips (2023–2024 DAFW cases).

On the fatal side, BLS also reported 844 fatal work-related injuries from falls, slips, and trips in 2024.

In other words: even when a fall seems “minor,” it’s a major driver of real injuries.

Why Pain Can Show Up Days Later

1) Adrenaline masks symptoms

Right after a fall, your nervous system is in “protect and move” mode. Adrenaline and stress hormones can temporarily dull pain signals, so you may not feel the full impact until later that evening or the next day.

2) Your body tenses to protect you

After a slip, your body often goes into automatic “save the fall” mode—arms flail, the hip twists, the knee catches, and the low back stiffens. Those protective reflexes can cause:

Muscle strains (low back, glutes, hip flexors)

Joint irritation (SI joint, hip, knee)

Tendon overload (hamstring, quad, patellar tendon)

The soreness that shows up later is often your body saying, “That was a bigger event than you thought.”

3) Most workplace falls are “same level” falls

Many workplace injuries are not just ladder falls. They’re slips on wet floors, uneven mats, clutter, or awkward pivots while carrying something. CDC/NIOSH notes that the highest counts of nonfatal fall injuries occur in certain industries and are mostly slips and falls on the same level.

Same-level falls often create twisting and impact forces that hit the hip, knee, and low back hard.

4) Inflammation has a delayed timeline

Inflammation ramps up over hours. That’s why people commonly feel “fine” after the fall, then wake up stiff and sore the next morning, or feel worse on day 2.

These are red-flag-free but still important symptoms that often benefit from evaluation:

Hip pain when walking, getting in/out of a car, or turning in bed

Knee pain on stairs, squatting, or after sitting

Low back pain with bending, lifting, or standing too long

Tailbone soreness (especially if you landed seated)

Tightness in glutes/hamstrings that feels like “pulling”

A limp or uneven stride that wasn’t there before

These patterns matter because walking differently for even a few days can create secondary pain in the back, hip, or opposite knee.

What to Do in the First 72 Hours

If you’ve had a slip and fall at work in Everett or nearby:

Document symptoms early
Even if pain is mild, write down where you hurt and what movements trigger it.

Move gently, don’t “bed rest”
Short walks, light range-of-motion, and avoiding prolonged sitting usually beat total rest for most strains and joint irritation.

Avoid aggressive stretching into sharp pain
Stretching can help later, but early on it’s easy to overdo it and irritate tissue.

Get checked if symptoms worsen, spread, or don’t improve
Especially if you notice radiating pain, increasing swelling, instability, or significant movement loss.

Washington State L&I publishes injury data tools that track workers’ comp claims and injury patterns statewide, underscoring how common and costly work injuries can be over time.

How PT, Chiropractic, and Massage Therapy Help Work Fall Injuries

A good work-injury plan should do two things:

help you feel better now, and

help you move well enough that the injury doesn’t linger.

Physical therapy

Often focuses on:

restoring normal walking mechanics

improving hip/knee stability

rebuilding strength safely (especially for return-to-work demands)

Chiropractic care

Often focuses on:

restoring motion in stiff spinal or pelvic joints

reducing mechanical irritation that can keep the low back “stuck”

Massage therapy

Often helps with:

calming protective muscle guarding

improving comfort so you can move normally again

In an integrated clinic, these approaches can complement each other—especially when the injury involves both impact (bruise/joint irritation) and strain (tight, reactive muscles).

When to Seek an Evaluation

Consider booking an evaluation if:

pain lasts more than 7–10 days

walking feels uneven or you’re limping

knee feels unstable, swollen, or “catches”

hip pain interrupts sleep or stairs

low back pain is worsening or spreading

And if your fall involved a ladder, it’s worth taking seriously even if you feel okay. Washington resources commonly highlight ladder falls as a recurring source of serious work injuries.

Local Next Step

If you’ve had a slip and fall at work in Everett, early care can help prevent that “minor fall” from turning into weeks of hip, knee, and low back pain. We serve patients across Snohomish County, including Lynnwood, Mukilteo, and Mill Creek, with coordinated physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage therapy.

February in Everett and Snohomish County is peak “hunched season.” Cold mornings, rainy commutes, more time indoors, and long hours at a desk can quietly stack up—until you realize you’re dealing with nagging neck tightness, upper back stiffness, tension headaches, or even tingling into the shoulders and arms.

The good news: posture-related pain is often very treatable. At an Everett chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage therapy clinic, we see this pattern constantly—especially from patients in Everett, Mill Creek, Lynnwood, Bothell, Mukilteo, and surrounding areas who sit for work, drive long distances, or spend evenings on the couch scrolling.

Why February makes posture pain worse

A few seasonal factors tend to amplify “tech neck” and desk-related strain:

Cold-weather guarding: When you’re chilly, your shoulders rise and your neck muscles brace. That tension can become your new normal.

Less movement: Fewer walks and outdoor activities = stiffer joints and tighter soft tissue.

More screen time: Winter evenings often mean more phone, laptop, gaming, or TV time—usually with a forward head posture.

Stress + sleep changes: Busy schedules, short daylight hours, and stress can tighten the jaw/neck/upper traps and contribute to headaches.

Common symptoms we see from desk posture

If you’re in Snohomish County and noticing any of these, posture strain may be the culprit:

Neck stiffness or limited range of motion

Tight shoulders or “knots” in the upper traps

Upper back pain between the shoulder blades

Tension headaches (often starting at the base of the skull)

Jaw tension, clenching, or TMJ irritation

Numbness/tingling down the arm (from irritated nerves or tight muscles)

Pain that flares after driving, working, or scrolling

When posture pain isn’t “just posture”

Sometimes people assume they simply need a new pillow or a better chair. Those can help, but if symptoms are persistent, it often means the body needs more than a quick fix.

You should consider an evaluation if:

Pain lasts more than 7–10 days

Headaches are recurring or increasing

You feel tingling, numbness, weakness, or radiating pain

You’re avoiding normal activities because it “flares everything up”

Your neck pain started after a minor injury, fall, or fender bender

How chiropractic care helps posture-related pain

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring joint mobility—especially in the neck and upper back—so your body can move normally again.

When the spine isn’t moving well, nearby muscles often tighten to stabilize, and posture tends to collapse. Chiropractic adjustments can help by:

Improving mobility in the cervical spine (neck) and thoracic spine (upper back)

Reducing stiffness that contributes to headaches and upper back pain

Supporting better alignment and movement mechanics

Helping your nervous system “downshift” out of constant tension

How physical therapy helps you keep the results

If chiropractic “opens the door,” physical therapy helps you walk through it—and stay there.

Physical therapy for posture problems commonly includes:

Deep neck flexor strengthening (the muscles that support neutral head posture)

Scapular stability and upper back strengthening

Mobility work for the thoracic spine

Shoulder mechanics retraining (especially for desk workers)

A home plan that fits real life (not a 45-minute routine you’ll never do)

This is especially helpful if you’re dealing with recurring pain, weakness, or symptoms that keep coming back after stressful weeks.

How massage therapy fits in

Massage is often the missing piece when you’re stuck in tightness.

Desk posture pain tends to overload:

Upper traps

Levator scapulae

Scalenes

Pectorals (tight chest = rounded shoulders)

Suboccipitals (base of skull muscles linked to headaches)

Massage therapy can help by:

Releasing trigger points and muscle guarding

Why low back pain flares up in January

January is when a lot of people in Everett and Snohomish County hit “reset mode”: new workouts, more desk time after the holidays, more driving in winter weather, and sometimes a little less daily movement. Your low back can feel it—especially if your hips are tight, your core isn’t firing well, or you’ve been sitting more than usual.

The good news: low back pain often responds really well to simple, consistent habits—especially when you combine them with chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage therapy.

Habit 1: Do the “2-minute morning unlock”

Before you rush out the door (or hop on a laptop), give your back a quick reset:

5 slow belly breaths (hands on ribs, expand 360°)

10 gentle pelvic tilts

10 hip hinges (hands on hips, keep spine long)

20–30 seconds per side: hip flexor stretch

This routine is short, but it tells your nervous system “we’re safe to move,” and it can reduce that stiff, stuck feeling.

Habit 2: Set a sitting strategy (not a perfect posture)

“Perfect posture” is a trap—what your back really wants is position changes. If you work in Everett, Lynnwood, or commute on I-5, your back is spending time in one shape for too long.

Try this instead:

Change position every 30–45 minutes (stand, walk, or stretch)

Keep feet supported (flat on floor or a small footrest)

Bring your screen up so your eyes aren’t angled downward

Keep your keyboard close so you’re not reaching forward

Even small changes can reduce low back strain and help your core do its job.

Habit 3: Build a stronger “walking core”

A lot of low back pain is tied to how your core and hips coordinate during everyday movement—walking, stairs, lifting kids, carrying groceries.

A simple core plan (3–4 days/week, 5–8 minutes):

Dead bug (slow, controlled): 2 sets of 6–8 per side

Glute bridge: 2 sets of 10

Side plank (knees down is fine): 2 sets of 15–25 seconds per side

Hip hinge practice: 1–2 minutes

If your back pain is persistent, a physical therapist can tailor these exercises to your exact movement pattern.

Habit 4: Stretch what’s actually pulling on your low back

Your back often feels tight because something else is tight. The biggest repeat offenders:

Hip flexors (front of hips)

Glutes and piriformis

Hamstrings

Thoracic spine (mid-back)

A practical nightly stretch set:

Hip flexor stretch: 30–45 seconds per side

Figure-4 stretch: 30–45 seconds per side

Hamstring stretch (gentle): 30 seconds per side

Open book (mid-back rotation): 6–8 reps per side

Massage therapy can also be a game-changer here—especially if you’ve got trigger points or that “gluey” tight fascia feeling.

Habit 5: Lift like you’re training—because you are

January often comes with new lifting demands: gym routines, reorganizing, hauling gear, or weekend projects. Your back usually gets irritated when you lift with a rounded spine + load + speed.

A safer lifting checklist:

Get close to the object

Hinge at hips, don’t fold at the waist

Exhale as you lift (helps core coordination)

Avoid twisting while holding weight—turn your feet instead

If you’ve thrown your back out before, it’s worth learning a few personalized lifting strategies in PT.

When to get help (instead of “waiting it out”)
Consider scheduling an evaluation if:

Pain lasts longer than 10–14 days

Pain travels into the glute/leg or includes numbness/tingling

Your back “locks up” repeatedly

You’re avoiding normal movement because you don’t trust your back

At Everett Spine and Rehab, many patients do best with a combined plan: chiropractic care to improve joint mobility, PT to rebuild movement and strength, and massage therapy to calm tight, protective muscles.

FAQ: Low back pain in January

Is walking good for low back pain?
Often yes—easy walking improves circulation and reduces stiffness. Start with 10–15 minutes.

Should I stretch or strengthen first?
Usually both, but gentle mobility first can help strengthening feel better and safer.

Can massage help low back pain?
Yes—especially when muscle guarding and trigger points are part of the problem.

Ready to start the year with a stronger back?
If you’re in Everett, Marysville, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Mill Creek, or Snohomish, our team can help you move better, feel better, and keep your back from flaring up again.
The post New Year, New Back: Simple Habits to Reduce Low Back Pain first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.

In the high-stakes world of athletics, maintaining peak physical condition is paramount. Athletes constantly push their bodies to the limit, striving for that extra edge over their competition. However, with intense training and competition comes the increased risk of injury and physical strain. This is where preventative care, particularly routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy, plays a crucial role in keeping athletes at the top of their game.

The Importance of Preventative Care

Preventative care is the proactive approach to health and wellness, focusing on preventing injuries and ailments before they occur rather than treating them after the fact. For athletes, this means taking measures to ensure their bodies remain resilient and capable of handling the rigors of their sport. Incorporating routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy into an athlete’s training regimen can significantly contribute to this goal.

According to data from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans annually, including a significant number of athletes. Chiropractic care is integrated into the health teams of every NFL team, every NBA franchise, 28 MLB teams, and many professional soccer teams worldwide. This widespread adoption underscores the value placed on chiropractic care for maintaining peak physical condition and preventing injuries

Chiropractic Adjustments: Aligning the Path to Peak Performance

Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues, particularly those related to the spine. Misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, can lead to a variety of problems, including pain, reduced mobility, and decreased performance. Chiropractors use specific adjustments to correct these misalignments, restoring proper function and alignment to the spine and other joints.

For athletes, routine chiropractic adjustments offer several benefits:

Enhanced Performance: Proper spinal alignment ensures optimal nervous system function, which can improve muscle coordination, strength, and overall performance. Athletes often report feeling more balanced and agile after adjustments.

Studies on the central nervous system’s control of posture and locomotion demonstrate that maintaining proper spinal alignment is essential for efficient movement and balance. Proper alignment facilitates the appropriate activation of postural and locomotor muscles, which is critical for coordinated and smooth movements.

Injury Prevention: Misalignments can increase the risk of injuries by placing undue stress on certain parts of the body. Regular chiropractic care helps maintain proper alignment, reducing the likelihood of strains, sprains, and other injuries.

Faster Recovery: Chiropractic adjustments can enhance the body’s natural healing processes by improving circulation and reducing inflammation. This can lead to quicker recovery times from injuries and intense training sessions.

Pain Relief: By addressing the root causes of pain rather than just the symptoms, chiropractic care can provide long-term relief from chronic pain issues, allowing athletes to train and compete more effectively.

Massage Therapy: Relax, Recover, and Rejuvenate

Massage therapy is another critical component of preventative care for athletes. It involves manipulating the muscles and soft tissues of the body to relieve tension, reduce pain, and promote relaxation. Different types of massage, such as deep tissue, sports massage, and myofascial release, can be tailored to meet the specific needs of athletes.

The benefits of routine massage therapy for athletes include:

Improved Flexibility: Regular massage helps keep muscles flexible and pliable, which can enhance an athlete’s range of motion and reduce the risk of injuries related to tight or stiff muscles.

Reduced Muscle Soreness: Intense training can lead to muscle soreness and stiffness. Massage therapy increases blood flow to the affected areas, promoting the removal of metabolic waste products and reducing soreness.

Stress Reduction: The physical and mental demands of athletic competition can be stressful. Massage therapy promotes relaxation and helps reduce stress levels, contributing to better overall mental health and focus.

Enhanced Circulation: Studies have shown that massage therapy can significantly increase muscle blood flow. This enhanced blood flow helps deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which is crucial for recovery and performance. For instance, research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports demonstrated that massage increases blood flow in skeletal muscle, which facilitates better oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscle tissues.

Integrating Chiropractic and Massage Therapy

The combination of chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy provides a comprehensive approach to preventative care for athletes. While chiropractic care focuses on alignment and joint health, massage therapy addresses muscle health and relaxation. Together, they create a synergistic effect that can help athletes maintain peak physical condition.

To maximize the benefits of chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy, athletes should incorporate these treatments into their regular training routines. Depending on the sport and individual needs, this might mean weekly or bi-weekly sessions with a chiropractor and regular massage therapy appointments.

Routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy offer a powerful combination of benefits, from improved performance and injury prevention to faster recovery and pain relief.

Summer is a time for fun, relaxation, and outdoor activities. However, if you’ve recently undergone back surgery, you might be wondering how to safely enjoy the season while continuing your recovery.

The most common types of back surgeries include discectomy (removal of herniated disc material), laminectomy (removal of part of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord), and spinal fusion (joining two or more vertebrae to eliminate movement between them). According to the Mayo Clinic, these procedures are usually recommended when conservative treatments fail to alleviate symptoms.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate summer activities post-back surgery.

Understanding Your Recovery

Recovering from back surgery involves a careful balance of rest and activity. It’s essential to follow your surgeon’s and physical therapist’s recommendations to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Here are some general tips to keep in mind:

Follow Your Post-Op Plan: Stick to the prescribed physical therapy exercises and attend all follow-up appointments. A physical therapist might prescribe at-home exercises such as gentle walking, pelvic tilts, leg slides, and bridge exercises to aid in the recovery and strengthen the back muscles following surgery.

Listen to Your Body: Pain and discomfort are signals to slow down or modify your activities. If you experience sharp pain, numbness, tingling, increased weakness, unusual swelling, or loss of bladder or bowel control after back surgery, stop exercising immediately and consult your healthcare provider.

Gradual Progression: Increase your activity level gradually to avoid setbacks.

Safe Summer Activities

Engaging in light, low-impact activities can be beneficial for your recovery. Here are some summer activities that can be enjoyable and safe post-back surgery:

Walking:

Walking is a low-impact exercise that promotes circulation and aids in recovery.

Choose flat, even surfaces such as parks or walking trails.

Start with short walks and gradually increase the duration.

Swimming:

Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise that reduces strain on the back.

Opt for gentle strokes like the backstroke or sidestroke.

Avoid strenuous swimming activities and high-impact water sports.

Yoga and Stretching:

Gentle yoga and stretching can improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension.

Focus on poses that don’t strain your back, such as child’s pose or cat-cow stretch.

Avoid any movements that involve twisting or excessive bending.

Cycling:

Cycling on a stationary bike can be a safe way to stay active.

Ensure the bike is adjusted correctly to maintain good posture.

Start with short sessions and monitor your body’s response.

Tips for Outdoor Activities

When engaging in outdoor activities, consider the following tips to ensure your safety and comfort:

Stay Hydrated:

Drink plenty of water, especially in hot weather, to prevent dehydration.

Carry a water bottle with you during activities.

Wear Supportive Footwear:

Choose shoes with good arch support and cushioning to reduce impact on your back.

Avoid flip-flops or sandals that offer little support.

Use Sunscreen and Protective Clothing:

Protect your skin from sunburn by applying sunscreen and wearing a hat.

Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool.

Avoid Prolonged Sitting:

If you’re attending outdoor events or traveling, take breaks to stand and stretch.

Use a lumbar roll or cushion for added support if sitting for extended periods.

Modify Activities as Needed:

Don’t hesitate to modify or skip activities that cause discomfort or pain.

Communicate with your physical therapist about any concerns or questions.

Activities to Avoid

While it’s important to stay active, certain activities can be risky post-back surgery. Avoid the following to prevent complications:

High-Impact Sports:

Sports that involve running, jumping, or sudden movements can strain your back.

Heavy Lifting:

Avoid lifting heavy objects or engaging in activities that require excessive bending or twisting.

Intense Cardio Exercises:

High-intensity exercises like running or aerobics can put undue stress on your back.

Conclusion

Recovering from back surgery during the summer doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun. By following your recovery plan and choosing safe, low-impact activities, you can enjoy the season while promoting your healing process. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new activity, and listen to your body to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

Physical therapy is a vital healthcare profession dedicated to enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Often, the benefits of physical therapy are associated with high-profile conditions like sports injuries or post-surgical rehabilitation. However, the scope of physical therapy extends far beyond these well-known areas. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in managing a wide array of lesser-known conditions that significantly impact daily living. By addressing chronic pain, vestibular disorders, respiratory issues, and even sleep disorders, physical therapists help individuals improve their overall health and well-being.

In the United States, the demand for physical therapy services is substantial. As of 2023, there are approximately 575,000 physical therapists in the U.S. Physical therapists (PTs) are often associated with treating sports injuries or aiding post-surgical recovery, but there are many lesser-known reasons someone might need to see a physical therapist. Here are a few:

Reasons to for Physical Therapy

Chronic Pain Management: Beyond common conditions like back pain, PTs can help with chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome by developing personalized exercise programs and pain management strategies.

Headaches and Migraines: PTs can address musculoskeletal issues in the neck and upper back that contribute to chronic headaches and migraines through manual therapy, posture education, and exercises. A systematic review indicated that interventions like massage therapy, physiotherapy, relaxation training, and chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy could be as effective as medications such as propranolol and topiramate for migraine prevention.

Vestibular Disorders: Conditions like vertigo and dizziness can be managed with vestibular rehabilitation therapy, which involves specific exercises designed to improve balance and reduce dizziness.

Jaw Pain (TMJ Disorders): Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can cause jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty eating. PTs can use manual therapy and exercises to alleviate these symptoms.

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Both men and women can experience pelvic floor issues, which may lead to incontinence, pelvic pain, or sexual dysfunction. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help strengthen these muscles and improve function.

Respiratory Issues: PTs can assist individuals with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis by providing breathing exercises and techniques to improve lung function and overall endurance.

A man coughing during cold months

Neurological Conditions: For conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or after a stroke, physical therapy can help maintain mobility, improve balance, and enhance overall physical function.

Cancer Rehabilitation: Cancer and its treatments can lead to significant physical impairments. PTs can help with fatigue, pain, weakness, and lymphedema management.

Lymphedema Management: Swelling often occurs after lymph node removal or damage. PTs trained in lymphedema management can provide manual lymphatic drainage and teach compression techniques.

Pediatric Development Issues: Children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, or other congenital conditions can benefit from physical therapy to improve motor skills, strength, and coordination.

Work-Related Injuries: PTs can help with ergonomics and body mechanics to prevent and treat injuries caused by repetitive strain or poor workplace setup.

Women’s Health Issues: Conditions like prenatal and postnatal pain, osteoporosis, and recovery after mastectomy can be managed with the help of a physical therapist.

Sleep Disorders: Surprisingly, physical therapy can aid in managing conditions that affect sleep, such as sleep apnea, by improving posture and reducing neck tension.

A snoring sleep partner can be disruptive to sleep

Burn Recovery: Physical therapy can aid in the recovery process for burn victims by improving range of motion, strength, and function of affected areas.

These examples highlight the broad scope of physical therapy beyond the common perception, showcasing how PTs can play a vital role in managing a wide array of health conditions.

The human body is an amazing machine; walking, running, skipping, thinking, feeling, creating, and speaking doesn’t nearly cover the amount of things it can do. However, when our bodies get injured or we are in constant pain, we need a little help recovering. That’s where physical therapy comes in. Even though physical therapy has become more widely known over the years, there’s still a lot of surprising facts about it. It’s not just for sports stars or folks recovering from surgery. It’s accessible to nearly everyone and can help with a ton of ailments.

There are lots of questions to answer when it comes to physical therapy, so let’s start with the obvious. What is physical therapy? Physical therapy is intentional, rehabilitative movement of the body that helps with mobility, pain reduction, restorative functions, and prevention of injuries. A physical therapist will create a plan to work with each patient to help with their particular issue. It may take a few weeks of physical therapy to correct or manage a problem or it may take several months, depending on the injury. Physical therapy treats both acute (sudden pain usually from an injury) and chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than three months). Therapists’ can use techniques such as massage, manual therapy, or acupuncture in addition to specific exercises.

PT: It’s Not Just for Sports

Physical therapy helps with many problems, such as back pain, neck pain, sports related injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip pain, strokes, spinal cord injuries, and brain injuries, among many others. In addition to acute pain, physical therapy can help with long term conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

It isn’t just below the neck that physical therapists’ treat. They can also help with TMJ disorder. Temporomandibular joint disorder is pain in the muscle that connects the jawbone to the skull. People with TMJ disorder can experience intense facial pain and headaches, reduction of movement in the jaw, and pain around the ear(s). What physical therapy can do is drastically reduce pain in the area with exercises to strengthen and stretch the jaw muscles. Other treatments could include hot and cold ice on the area in pain.

Arthritic pain is an excellent reason to see a physical therapist. Not only can they help manage pain from arthritis, they can help slow down the process entirely. By evaluating your posture, body mechanics, and muscle imbalances, a physical therapist can help reduce pain, fatigue, and even improve overall balance in the body.

With significant portions of the U.S. population reporting inadequate rest, including those with chronic sleep disorders, understanding these benefits is crucial.

Studies have shown that classical foot massage can effectively reduce insomnia and anxiety in preeclamptic pregnant women, while parent-led massage contributes to improved sleep quality and potential brain development benefits in infants.

Additionally, therapeutic touch has been found to enhance sleep quality in menopausal women.

AMTA emphasizes the importance of quality sleep for overall health and wellness, citing its role in heart health, hormone regulation, immune function, and physical recovery. As a trusted advocate for massage therapy, AMTA promotes its use as a natural alternative to prescription medication for addressing sleep issues.

Acupuncture and Massage Therapy

A recent clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open examined the effectiveness of acupuncture and massage therapy for musculoskeletal pain in 298 patients with advanced cancer. Both treatments were found to significantly reduce pain, fatigue, and insomnia while improving the patients’ quality of life over 26 weeks.

The study addressed the need for non-pharmacological pain management options due to the limitations and side effects of opioid medications, especially amid the opioid crisis. The IMPACT trial (Integrative Medicine for Pain in Patients with Advanced Cancer Trial) included patients with advanced cancer experiencing musculoskeletal pain and compared the outcomes of acupuncture and massage therapy. Results showed that more than 50% of patients in both groups experienced a clinical response, with no significant difference in effectiveness between acupuncture and massage. Common side effects included soreness and headache for massage and bleeding, localized pain, and bruising for acupuncture. However, the study had limitations such as the lack of sham or control groups, clinician and patient blinding, and limited generalizability to community settings. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that acupuncture and massage therapy could be valuable integrative modalities for improving pain management and patient outcomes in advanced cancer cases.

In today’s bustling work environments, muscle strain injuries are a prevalent concern, often arising from the demands of daily tasks and repetitive motions. Whether it’s sitting at a desk for prolonged periods, engaging in physically demanding labor, or simply navigating through daily activities, the risk of muscle strain lurks around every corner.

Why Do Muscle Sprains Happen at Work?

Muscle sprains are a prevalent workplace injury, often stemming from various occupational hazards. Repetitive motions, such as typing on a keyboard or operating machinery, can strain muscles over time, leading to sprains and discomfort. Moreover, jobs that entail heavy lifting, such as in construction or warehouse work, pose a significant risk of sprains, particularly in the back, shoulders, and legs. Employees who repeatedly lift heavy objects without proper training or equipment are prone to strains and sprains due to the excessive stress placed on their muscles.

Repetitive tasks like typing can cause strain

Poor ergonomics also contribute to workplace-related muscle sprains. Improper workstation setups, including poorly adjusted chairs, desks at incorrect heights, or inadequate support for wrists and arms, can lead to musculoskeletal issues over time. Prolonged sitting or standing in awkward positions without sufficient breaks can exacerbate these problems, causing strains in the neck, back, and wrists.

Sudden movements or accidents in the workplace can also result in muscle sprains. Slip-and-fall accidents, trips over objects, or unexpected collisions can cause individuals to twist or overextend their muscles, leading to sprains in various areas of the body. For instance, sudden jerks or falls can strain the neck, shoulders, or legs, causing acute pain and limited mobility. Implementing proper safety protocols, providing adequate training, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment can help reduce the likelihood of such accidents and subsequent muscle sprains in the workplace.

What Can Employees Do to Prevent Muscle Sprains and Injuries?

Employees can take proactive steps to improve ergonomics and reduce the risk of muscle strain in the workplace:

Taking micro-breaks is beneficial

Communicate with Employers: Advocate for ergonomic improvements in the workplace by communicating concerns and suggesting solutions to employers or supervisors. Participate in ergonomic assessments and provide feedback to help tailor ergonomic solutions to individual needs.

Adjust Workstation Setup: Arrange chairs, desks, and computer equipment to ensure proper alignment. Adjust chair height so feet are flat on the floor and knees are level with hips. Position computer monitors at eye level and directly in front to prevent neck strain. Mayo Clinic has a wonderful diagram and guide for your reference.

Take Regular Breaks: Incorporate short breaks throughout the day to stretch and rest muscles. Use micro-breaks to change positions, stand up, and perform simple stretches to alleviate tension and improve circulation. Micro-breaks have also been shown to boost productivity and help battle burnout.

Practice Proper Posture: Maintain good posture while sitting and standing. Sit upright with shoulders relaxed, back supported, and feet flat on the floor. Avoid slouching or leaning forward, which can strain muscles in the back and neck.

Use Ergonomic Accessories: Use ergonomic tools and accessories, such as wrist rests, ergonomic keyboards and mice, and adjustable monitor stands, to support proper alignment and reduce strain on muscles and joints.

Engage in Regular Exercise: Incorporate regular physical activity into daily routines to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Focus on exercises that target areas prone to strain, such as the back, neck, and shoulders, to build resilience and prevent injury.

Practice Mindful Movement: Be mindful of body mechanics when performing tasks, such as lifting or reaching. Use proper lifting techniques, bend at the knees and hips instead of the waist and avoid twisting motions that can strain muscles.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and support muscle function. Maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients to provide essential fuel for muscles and promote overall health and well-being.

Seeking the Help of a Chiropractor

Chiropractors can offer several ways to help individuals recover from muscle strain injuries:

Spinal Manipulation: Chiropractors use spinal manipulation techniques to realign the spine and joints, which can alleviate muscle tension and improve range of motion. By restoring proper alignment, chiropractic adjustments can reduce strain on surrounding muscles and promote faster healing.

Soft Tissue Therapy: Chiropractors may utilize soft tissue techniques such as massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy to target specific areas of muscle tension and tightness. These therapies help to relax tight muscles, increase blood flow, and reduce inflammation, facilitating the healing process.

Corrective Exercises: Chiropractors often prescribe specific exercises and stretches to strengthen weakened muscles, improve flexibility, and correct imbalances contributing to muscle strain injuries. These exercises help to rehabilitate injured muscles and prevent future injuries by promoting proper alignment and movement patterns.

Postural Education: Chiropractors provide guidance on proper posture and ergonomics to prevent recurrent muscle strain injuries. By teaching patients how to maintain optimal posture during daily activities and at work, chiropractors help reduce stress on muscles and joints, minimizing the risk of further injury.

Nutritional Advice: Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting muscle recovery and overall healing. Chiropractors may offer dietary recommendations and supplements to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and promote optimal musculoskeletal health.

Lifestyle Modifications: Chiropractors work with patients to identify lifestyle factors that may contribute to muscle strain injuries, such as poor ergonomics, repetitive movements, or overexertion.

Overall, chiropractors take a holistic approach to treating muscle strain injuries, addressing the underlying causes of discomfort and promoting comprehensive healing and wellness. Through personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs, chiropractors help individuals recover from muscle strain injuries, restore function, and improve their quality of life. Those in the Snohomish County area are encouraged to contact Dr. Gill, chiropractor at Everett Spine and Rehab, if they are experiencing pain, discomfort or injuries from the workplace. At ESR, we are able to help evaluate and find a personalized regimen to help through this!
