As the world’s eyes are on the games at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the spotlight not only shines on the athletes’ performances but also on their rigorous training regimens that include essential recovery techniques like massage therapy. This practice has become a cornerstone for Olympians, helping them to prevent injuries and maintain peak performance. In this article, we will explore which celebrated athletes have incorporated massage therapy into their routines and how it has contributed to their success on the world stage.

Usain Bolt is a Jamaican sprinter widely regarded as the fastest man in the world, holding multiple Olympic gold medals and world records in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. Usain Bolt has emphasized the significance of massage therapy in managing his scoliosis and aiding recovery from intense training sessions. In his autobiography, “Faster Than Lightning,” Bolt discussed how his spinal curvature worsened over time, leading to frequent injuries early in his career. He credited massage therapy with helping him manage these issues and maintain his peak performance. Additionally, Bolt’s use of massage and other recovery techniques has been widely recognized in various sports and health discussions.

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has credited chiropractic adjustments with helping him maintain his peak performance and achieve his historic victories. Phelps has also emphasized the role of massage therapy in his training, highlighting how it has aided his recovery and overall well-being throughout his swimming career

Here are Others in the Olympics Sphere who Tout the Benefits of Massage Therapy

Kerri Strug – The elite gymnast, famous for her heroic vault at the 1996 Olympics, regularly used massage therapy to help manage pain and recover from injuries throughout her career.

Bonnie Blair – The Olympic speedskating champion benefitted from massage therapy to maintain her competitive edge and recover from the physical demands of training and competition.

Michelle Blessing – An Olympic coach at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, she emphasized that triathletes on the national and resident teams received massages at least twice a week to aid muscle recovery and prevent injuries.

Kathy Flippin – A volunteer massage therapist for the USA Swimming National Team, she has provided massage therapy to Olympic swimmers since 2001, helping them prepare for and recover from competitions.

In the high-stakes world of athletics, maintaining peak physical condition is paramount. Athletes constantly push their bodies to the limit, striving for that extra edge over their competition. However, with intense training and competition comes the increased risk of injury and physical strain. This is where preventative care, particularly routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy, plays a crucial role in keeping athletes at the top of their game.

The Importance of Preventative Care

Preventative care is the proactive approach to health and wellness, focusing on preventing injuries and ailments before they occur rather than treating them after the fact. For athletes, this means taking measures to ensure their bodies remain resilient and capable of handling the rigors of their sport. Incorporating routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy into an athlete’s training regimen can significantly contribute to this goal.

According to data from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans annually, including a significant number of athletes. Chiropractic care is integrated into the health teams of every NFL team, every NBA franchise, 28 MLB teams, and many professional soccer teams worldwide. This widespread adoption underscores the value placed on chiropractic care for maintaining peak physical condition and preventing injuries

Chiropractic Adjustments: Aligning the Path to Peak Performance

Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues, particularly those related to the spine. Misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, can lead to a variety of problems, including pain, reduced mobility, and decreased performance. Chiropractors use specific adjustments to correct these misalignments, restoring proper function and alignment to the spine and other joints.

For athletes, routine chiropractic adjustments offer several benefits:

Enhanced Performance: Proper spinal alignment ensures optimal nervous system function, which can improve muscle coordination, strength, and overall performance. Athletes often report feeling more balanced and agile after adjustments.

Studies on the central nervous system’s control of posture and locomotion demonstrate that maintaining proper spinal alignment is essential for efficient movement and balance. Proper alignment facilitates the appropriate activation of postural and locomotor muscles, which is critical for coordinated and smooth movements.

Injury Prevention: Misalignments can increase the risk of injuries by placing undue stress on certain parts of the body. Regular chiropractic care helps maintain proper alignment, reducing the likelihood of strains, sprains, and other injuries.

Faster Recovery: Chiropractic adjustments can enhance the body’s natural healing processes by improving circulation and reducing inflammation. This can lead to quicker recovery times from injuries and intense training sessions.

Pain Relief: By addressing the root causes of pain rather than just the symptoms, chiropractic care can provide long-term relief from chronic pain issues, allowing athletes to train and compete more effectively.

Massage Therapy: Relax, Recover, and Rejuvenate

Massage therapy is another critical component of preventative care for athletes. It involves manipulating the muscles and soft tissues of the body to relieve tension, reduce pain, and promote relaxation. Different types of massage, such as deep tissue, sports massage, and myofascial release, can be tailored to meet the specific needs of athletes.

The benefits of routine massage therapy for athletes include:

Improved Flexibility: Regular massage helps keep muscles flexible and pliable, which can enhance an athlete’s range of motion and reduce the risk of injuries related to tight or stiff muscles.

Reduced Muscle Soreness: Intense training can lead to muscle soreness and stiffness. Massage therapy increases blood flow to the affected areas, promoting the removal of metabolic waste products and reducing soreness.

Stress Reduction: The physical and mental demands of athletic competition can be stressful. Massage therapy promotes relaxation and helps reduce stress levels, contributing to better overall mental health and focus.

Enhanced Circulation: Studies have shown that massage therapy can significantly increase muscle blood flow. This enhanced blood flow helps deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which is crucial for recovery and performance. For instance, research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports demonstrated that massage increases blood flow in skeletal muscle, which facilitates better oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscle tissues.

Integrating Chiropractic and Massage Therapy

The combination of chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy provides a comprehensive approach to preventative care for athletes. While chiropractic care focuses on alignment and joint health, massage therapy addresses muscle health and relaxation. Together, they create a synergistic effect that can help athletes maintain peak physical condition.

To maximize the benefits of chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy, athletes should incorporate these treatments into their regular training routines. Depending on the sport and individual needs, this might mean weekly or bi-weekly sessions with a chiropractor and regular massage therapy appointments.

Conclusion

Preventative care is essential for athletes who want to stay at the top of their game. Routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy offer a powerful combination of benefits, from improved performance and injury prevention to faster recovery and pain relief. By integrating these therapies into their training regimen, athletes can ensure they are taking proactive steps to maintain their health, optimize their performance, and achieve their goals.

In observance of National Sleep Awareness Month, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) highlights recent research demonstrating the positive effects of massage on sleep quality. With significant portions of the U.S. population reporting inadequate rest, including those with chronic sleep disorders, understanding these benefits is crucial.

Studies have shown that classical foot massage can effectively reduce insomnia and anxiety in preeclamptic pregnant women, while parent-led massage contributes to improved sleep quality and potential brain development benefits in infants.

Additionally, therapeutic touch has been found to enhance sleep quality in menopausal women.

AMTA emphasizes the importance of quality sleep for overall health and wellness, citing its role in heart health, hormone regulation, immune function, and physical recovery. As a trusted advocate for massage therapy, AMTA promotes its use as a natural alternative to prescription medication for addressing sleep issues.

Acupuncture and Massage Therapy

A recent clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open examined the effectiveness of acupuncture and massage therapy for musculoskeletal pain in 298 patients with advanced cancer. Both treatments were found to significantly reduce pain, fatigue, and insomnia while improving the patients’ quality of life over 26 weeks.

The study addressed the need for non-pharmacological pain management options due to the limitations and side effects of opioid medications, especially amid the opioid crisis. The IMPACT trial (Integrative Medicine for Pain in Patients with Advanced Cancer Trial) included patients with advanced cancer experiencing musculoskeletal pain and compared the outcomes of acupuncture and massage therapy. Results showed that more than 50% of patients in both groups experienced a clinical response, with no significant difference in effectiveness between acupuncture and massage. Common side effects included soreness and headache for massage and bleeding, localized pain, and bruising for acupuncture. However, the study had limitations such as the lack of sham or control groups, clinician and patient blinding, and limited generalizability to community settings. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that acupuncture and massage therapy could be valuable integrative modalities for improving pain management and patient outcomes in advanced cancer cases.

Dealing with an injury can be a challenging and often frustrating experience, especially when it hinders our ability to engage in daily activities or pursue our fitness goals. Physical therapy is a crucial component in the recovery journey, offering a structured approach to rehabilitate and strengthen the body. While professional guidance is invaluable, incorporating home exercises into your routine can play a significant role in enhancing the effectiveness of rehabilitation.

Knee Injury

Knee injuries commonly occur through activities such as sudden twists, improper landing after jumps, overuse during repetitive motions like running, or direct impact during sports-related collisions.

Straight Leg Raises: Lie on your back, lift one leg straight up, and hold for a few seconds.

Quad Sets: Sit or lie down, tighten the thigh muscles, and hold for 5-10 seconds.

Heel Slides: Gently slide your heel up towards your buttocks while lying on your back.

Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries often result from repetitive overhead movements, improper lifting techniques, sudden impacts in contact sports, and overexertion during weightlifting or activities that strain the rotator cuff muscles.

Common causes of lower back pain include poor posture, lifting heavy objects with improper technique, sedentary lifestyles, muscle imbalances, and conditions like herniated discs or spinal stenosis, often exacerbated by factors such as obesity or aging.

Man experiences low back pain

Pelvic Tilts: Lie on your back, tighten your abdominal muscles, and tilt your pelvis upward.

Bridge Exercise: Lift your hips off the ground while lying on your back, engaging your core and glutes.

Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons within the shoulder joint, crucial for stabilizing the upper arm bone in the shoulder socket and maintaining stability during arm movements in various directions. Rotator cuff injuries are frequently caused by repetitive overhead motions, such as those in baseball pitching or swimming, sudden jerking movements, and degenerative changes associated with aging. Additionally, rotator cuff tears can occur gradually or suddenly due to factors like wear-and-tear or injuries, ranging from partial to full tears in the tendon.

Internal Rotation: Use a resistance band for internal rotation exercises.

Scapular Squeezes: Sit or stand and squeeze your shoulder blades together.

Rotator Cuff Stretch: Gently stretch the rotator cuff by bringing your arm across your body.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains commonly result from missteps, uneven surfaces, or sudden changes in direction, particularly during activities such as running, jumping, or sports that involve rapid lateral movements, leading to overstretching or tearing of the ligaments.

Toe Taps: While seated, tap your toes on the floor repeatedly to improve ankle flexibility.

Calf Raises: Stand on a flat surface and lift your heels off the ground, engaging your calf muscles.

Alphabet Exercises: Trace the alphabet with your toes to improve ankle range of motion.

Remember to consult with your physical therapist before starting any home exercises, as they can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific injury and recovery progress.

Chiropractors specialize in providing treatments to remedy their patients’ body pain without surgery or medications. Most chiropractors’ treatments involve spinal manipulation and holistic methods to treat spinal alignment. One of those treatments is traction therapy.

Almost every person suffers from some form of back pain in their life. Problems can occur with lifting heavy objects, prolonged sitting, accidents, and sedentary lifestyles.

Traction therapy is quite simple. Doctors have used spinal traction therapy for centuries. The purpose is to reverse the force of gravity on the vertebrae and allow relief from the gravitational pressure of everyday walking and sitting. This therapy allows nutrients and oxygen to flow to an otherwise undernourished inner spinal canal.

What is Spinal Traction?

Spinal traction is decompression therapy performed manually or mechanically. The most common uses are to treat pinched nerves, herniated discs, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, and many other spinal conditions.

There may be some spinal conditions that are not appropriate for traction therapy. Those conditions may include fractures, tumors, osteoporosis, aneurysms, and metal implants.

In manual spinal traction, chiropractors use their hands to apply force on the joints and muscles in a pulling type action. This process widens the spaces of the vertebrae.

In some cases, chiropractors may use mechanical traction. Patients will lie on a table that stretches the spine, and chiropractors will attach ropes and slings attached to pulleys to the body. The table then mechanically relieves pressure.

There may be other types of treatments applied before or after spinal traction. These treatments may include electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and heat or cold therapies.

Some patients experience some joint soreness or muscle spasms after traction therapy. Patients can discuss any possible side effects with their attending doctor.

Chiropractors use spinal traction as a tool in a total-management physical therapy plan. Chiropractors’ use of traction is generally just a part of a holistic plan in patient care.

Traction therapy has been most successful when coupled with an exercise program designed specifically for the patient. Pain is often decreased when doctors advise patients to build core strength. When patients strengthen their spinal supportive muscles, their traction therapy treatments are enhanced.

Exercise programs include step-boxes, mats, and gym ball exercises. The main exercise prescribed by the doctors is walking because it is safe and does not involve forceful and twisting action.

Since spinal traction stretches the muscles and bones in the back, many patients have experienced significant improvement in movement. This relief of the gravitational pull has provided the patient’s bodies to realign and decompress joints.

Some patients only need one or two tractions therapy sessions. However, there are some patients who can benefit from this type of therapy throughout their lives.

As part of a total wellness plan for patient care, many people find their pain reduced and the body more capable of healing itself without surgery or medications.

A massage treatment can be helpful at times like these, but when muscular pain is more serious, a different approach may be necessary. In cases of severe or ongoing pain, neuromuscular massage may be in order.

Also called Trigger Point Myotherapy, the American Academy of Pain Management acknowledges this massage method as an efficient way to treat back pain that is caused by soft tissue injury. The word ‘neuro’ meaning nerve-related, and the word ‘muscular’ pertaining to muscles, incorporates these two systems in the term, neuromuscular massage.

One specific situation where neuromuscular massage would be needed is after hip replacement surgery. Muscles and tendons that were cut are working to reconnect and scar tissue can get in the way during that process. Physical therapy that incorporates neuromuscular massage is not only beneficial at that time but is needed for optimal healing.

Injuries sustained from a car accident, workplace accident, or sports related incident are other examples that can be severe and qualify for neuromuscular massage. However, something as simple as twisting an ankle by tripping on a curb could also cause an injury that would warrant neuromuscular massage. Any situation that results in compromised muscle and joint connection is a candidate.

The American Institute of Alternative Medicine (AIAM) offers a list of many issues that neuromuscular massage would be an appropriate treatment for including: low back pain, upper back pain, carpal tunnel-like symptoms, sciatica-like symptoms, calf cramps, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, knee pain, jaw pain, Tempomandibular Joint Pain (TMJ disorders), hip pain, headaches, and iliotibial band friction syndrome.

Neuromuscular massage (also called NMT massage) is not comfortable or relaxing. This specialized type of manual massage therapy involves applying pressure either digitally or with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow to release areas of strain in a muscle, also called trigger points. Some people have described the experience as “good pain”.

Sessions are performed by a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) or a Certified Neuromuscular Massage Therapist (CNMT) and are intended to be ongoing until pain and/or dysfunction are diminished or eliminated. This is different than deep tissue massage which can be performed in one session.

Who Needs Neuromuscular Massage?

A woman awakes with back pain

The range of causes for a person to need neuromuscular massage is wide. According to the NeuroMuscular Therapy American Version, any soft tissue that needs relief from strain or pressure such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons will be improved with NMT. Scar tissue acquired from an injury or surgery as well as facial adhesions or restrictions will benefit by being broken up and lengthened with NMT, increasing mobility. NMT may correct poor posture and gait problems, allergies, emotional well-being, and a host of other ailments pertaining to the muscular and nervous systems.

According to WEBMD it is defined as: "… a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems." So, when someone has been suffering from serious muscle pain and wants to heal and feel better, that is a good reason to have neuromuscular massage.

I’d like to talk to you about sciatica, what causes it and what can be done about it.

There are several causes of sciatica. The sciatic nerve is about as big as your pinky and runs all the way down from your low back down your leg, to your toes. When this nerve is pinched or being impeding some way, the pain it causes is called sciatica.

The sciatic nerve can be pinched or impeded in several different areas along that route to your foot. The first area where it can be pinched is in the lower back itself. This can happen because of degeneration of the spine or the discs–remember, they’re the shock absorbers of your spine start to wear out. As they get thinner and thinner, there’s less space for the nerves to exit out. If they run out of space, those nerves can be pinched and can cause pain running down both legs, not just one side or the other. Also if the vertebra in the area are misaligned, or if there’s an accident that cause a lot of inflammation, this can also cause pain that runs down the leg. So sciatica can come from degeneration in the spine or disc herniation which is similar to rupture.

sciatica can be debilitating

The other area sciatica can come from is from your piriformis muscle. Some of you may have heard of this muscle. It goes from your hip to your tailbone and it connects those two bones. It also helps when turning your foot in and out. The piriformis muscle can go into spams for various reasons. Sometimes it starts to go into spasm because it’s trying to compensate for weak muscles surrounding it. If the muscles have become weakened due to lack of use in the butt area, the piriformis muscle starts to tighten up. The sciatic nerve passes either directly below or sometimes through the piriformis muscles so when piriformis muscle the tightens up, it goes into spasms, it can pinch the sciatic nerve in that spot and cause pain all the way down the leg. Sciatic nerve pain can be completely debilitating to the point where someone can’t walk, can’t think, can’t concentrate–it can be very, very painful and can stop a person doing their activities at work, at home, at school, or wherever they may be.

When somebody comes to us with sciatica we do a very thorough examination and diagnostic test to find out what is causing it. We can’t treat someone or tell someone we can fix their problem until we know where the pain is coming from.

Once we know what’s causing it, we can offer appropriate recommendations. Our recommendations might include physical therapy to stretch that muscle and strengthen the ones around it, it might also include a trigger point injection right into that muscle to get it to relax–that provides some immediate relief. And we might recommend decompression for the spine as we separate those discs and vertebrae, to open up that space it’s going to take that pressure off that nerve and the patient will feel a lot better and it’s also going to help rehydrate those discs.

Everett Chiropractic Adjustments, Snohomish County

We also may probably recommend chiropractic adjustment, just to make sure the bones and joints are moving properly and freely like they should. There are a lot of other treatments we can do such as cold laser, Graston Techniques, ultrasound, muscle therapy, like massage and other types of injections. But we don’t know what’s going to be the best for our patient until we are able to properly evaluate them. Please contact us at 425-347-8614 to schedule an appointment today. We are located in Everett, nearby Mukilteo, Marysville and Lynnwood.
The post What is Sciatica and What Can be Done About It? first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.

You can thank these muscles for allowing you to stand and walk upright as well as helping you walk (Source: spine-health.com). If you've ever heard of the term, "core muscle," this is what the PSOAS is! Consider it an important hip muscle and part of the hip flexors group.

What is a "Tight PSOAS"?

Muscle "tightness" might feel like you have trouble moving normally or you might feel pain, too. Symptoms of a tight psoas include: restriction in your hip socket; chronic back pain and tension in your lower back, hips, groin or pelvis. Aside from the obvious negative symptoms like pain, having a tight psoas might lead to poor posture, restricted breathing, scoliosis, difficulty standing straight and lower spine stress fracture (source: https://www.stack.com/a/psoas-muscle).

What can cause a tight psoas? Sitting for extending periods of time can cause your muscles to become tight. That's why it's important to periodically get up, move and stretch. Overuse or injury can also contribute to a tight or shortened muscle. Check out these psoas and hip flexor stretches and exercises from Berkeley Wellness.

Massage therapy has been used thousands of years as a healing method. Its origins date back to ancient India where it was used as ayurvedic medicine. Today, people seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons: treating back pain, neck pain, anxiety, strains, headaches, injuries, and even conditions such as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a disorder that involves widespread pain, tenderness, fatigue, and other symptoms. This condition can interfere with a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. An estimated 5 million American adults have fibromyalgia where the majority of sufferers are women.

In addition to pain and fatigue, people with fibromyalgia may have other symptoms: sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, headaches, painful menstrual periods, numbness or tingling of the extremities, restless legs syndrome and more. Unfortunately, the cause of this disorder is not yet clear and there is no specific test for it. A doctor will rely on a patients symptoms in order to make a diagnosis. As far as treatment goes for managing, there are a few FDA approved drugs as well as alternative therapy.

One such popular, non-invasive treatment is massage. A 2014 systematic review of the effectiveness of massage therapy for fibromyalgia patients. It was concluded that massage therapy with a duration 5 weeks or greater had beneficial immediate effects on improving pain, anxiety and depression in these patients. How does massage therapy actually work?

A trained massage therapist will manipulate the person’s muscles and soft tissue in order to reduce pain. There is more research indicating that massage can also help those with fibromyalgia with:

decreasing anxiety

decrease depression

improve quality of sleep over time

decrease stiffness

decrease fatigue

improve cortisol levels

There are various types of massage therapies–deep tissue, Swedish, Sports, hot stone–and you may find yourself having to experiment with several kinds before you find the right one for you. If you are seeking to ease your pain from fibromyalgia via massage therapy, please reach out to us at Everett Spine & Rehab.

When a person is in pain sometimes the only thing they know for sure is that they want that pain to stop, or at least let up as soon as possible. Some head to their doctor and have pain medication prescribed and get assigned a few exercises that are supposed to help. In many cases, the pain cannot be managed by these methods long term, and some asked to consider surgery. Another option which is often successful for many different types of pain and ailments is massage therapy, which is one of the several services that is offered by Everett Spine and Rehab Clinic in Everett, Washington.

How Massage Therapy Helps

If your injuries are related to muscle strain or tension, there is a good chance that massage therapy may help. During a massage, there is an increase in blood flow and an improvement in the patient’s circulation. This allows the nutrients that are already in the body to better reach the muscles and tissues. The result is decreased muscle tension which can improve flexibility and reduce pain caused by related tight muscles. In many cases, patients find that their sleep quality improves, and some experience a rise in endorphins which can combat anxiety and depression.

Conditions That May Benefit From Massage Therapy

Back pain is among the most common reasons why someone seeks a massage, but it has also been shown to help with conditions such as headaches, fibromyalgia, digestive issues, soft tissue strains, sports injuries, joint pain, and headaches.

Is Massage Right For You?

While massage therapy is effective in many different situations, it is not the answer for every type of pain, and sometimes some other method of treatment is necessary either instead of massage or along side of it in order to bring the patient the relief they need. Because finding out what will work for a specific patient takes some investigation, it helps when several different types of therapies are available in one place, as they are at our clinic, Everett Spine and Rehab Clinic in Everett, Washington. In addition to the two massage therapists we have on staff we also have several chiropractors who can assess your injuries fully and help determine whether chiropractic care is needed instead of or in addition to massage, Members of our team are also experienced in helping patients with physical therapy programs. An evaluation of your injuries can help determine what types of treatment is likely to be most effective in your particular case. Contact us at 425-347-8614 to set up an appointment.
The post Massage Therapy for Pain and Injury first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.
