Sciatica is one of those problems people often try to work around until it starts interfering with everyday life. What begins as an ache in the low back or buttock can turn into burning, tingling, numbness, or pain that travels down the leg, making it harder to sit through work, walk comfortably, sleep well, or drive without constantly shifting positions.

Sciatica is not a diagnosis by itself. It is a symptom pattern that usually points to irritation or compression involving the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that feed into it. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes sciatica as pain caused by compression, inflammation, or injury affecting a spinal nerve, often creating burning or shock-like pain that can travel through the buttock and down one leg.

When sciatica should not be ignored

Some mild cases improve with time and activity modification, but there are situations where getting checked makes sense sooner. If sciatica is affecting sleep, making it hard to sit through the day, limiting walking, or causing ongoing numbness or tingling, it is worth an evaluation. When symptoms keep returning or gradually get worse, patients often start changing the way they sit, stand, and move, which can add more strain elsewhere.

It is especially important to pay attention if pain is beginning to affect strength in the leg or foot, or if normal daily activities are becoming more difficult. Those changes can point to a problem that needs more than rest and guesswork.

What treatment may involve

At Everett Spine & Rehab, sciatica care may involve more than one service depending on what appears to be driving the symptoms. Chiropractic care may be used to address spinal and joint motion. Physical therapy may help improve mobility, core support, and movement patterns that reduce stress on the irritated area. Massage therapy can be useful when muscle guarding builds up around the low back, hip, or gluteal region. In some cases, spinal decompression may also be considered when disc-related symptoms appear to be part of the picture.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that spinal manipulation may lead to small improvements in pain and function for some people with low back pain. That matters because sciatica often overlaps with low back problems that affect walking, standing, sleeping, and other daily activities.

Why early care can matter

People often wait because they hope the pain will settle once they take it easy for a few days. Sometimes it does. But when radiating pain keeps affecting movement, work tolerance, or sleep, waiting too long can make recovery more frustrating. The longer nerve-related symptoms alter the way someone moves, the easier it is for compensation patterns to build.

A focused exam can help identify whether symptoms look more like nerve irritation, disc-related pain, muscular tension, or a combination of factors. From there, treatment can be individualized instead of based on trial and error.

FAQs

What does sciatica usually feel like?

It often feels like pain that travels from the low back or buttock into the leg. Some people also notice tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness.

Does sciatica always come from a herniated disc?

No. A disc issue is one possible cause, but sciatic symptoms can also be influenced by inflammation, joint restriction, or muscular tension affecting nearby nerves.

Can chiropractic and physical therapy both help sciatica?

In many cases, yes. Chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, and spinal decompression may each play a role depending on the source of symptoms and how severe they are.

When should I get checked?

If leg pain, numbness, or tingling is affecting sleep, walking, sitting, work, or daily movement, it is a good time to schedule an evaluation.

If sciatica is making everyday life harder, Everett Spine & Rehab can help identify what may be driving the pain and build a treatment plan focused on relief, function, and recovery.
The post When Sciatica Starts Affecting Walking, Sitting, or Sleep: When to Get Checked in Everett, WA first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.

As the vibrant colors of spring begin to bloom, many find themselves inspired to shed the winter layers and embrace a renewed commitment to fitness. With longer days and warmer temperatures beckoning us outdoors, spring offers the perfect opportunity to revitalize our exercise routines and embrace a healthier lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just embarking on your wellness journey, incorporating smart strategies into your springtime fitness regimen can set you on the path to success. From harnessing the power of nature for outdoor workouts to staying hydrated and protecting your skin, here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your spring fitness journey.

When it comes to spring fitness, there are several things to note and consider, along with examples of exercises that are particularly well-suited to the season.

Springtime Fitness and Exercise Tips before you Get Started

Gradual Progression: If you’re returning to outdoor exercise after a winter break, start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts to avoid injury.

Hydration: Hydration is always important but it is especially so in warmer temperatures which can lead to increased sweating. Carry a water bottle with you during outdoor workouts and drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise.

Sun Protection: As the sun gets stronger, protect your skin by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and try to exercise during the cooler parts of the day to minimize sun exposure.

Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers that you can easily remove as you warm up during your workout. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics that help keep you dry and comfortable.

Incorporate Nature: Take advantage of the beautiful spring weather by exercising outdoors in parks, trails, or green spaces. Incorporating nature into your workouts can also improve your mental health.

Variety of Activities: Spring offers a wide range of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as hiking, cycling, jogging, gardening, or playing sports like tennis or soccer. Mix up your routine to keep things interesting and target different muscle groups.

Functional Training: Incorporate exercises that mimic movements you use in everyday life, such as squats, lunges, and pushing or pulling movements. These exercises help improve strength, balance, and coordination.

Interval Training: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is effective for burning calories and improving cardiovascular fitness. Mix short bursts of intense activity with periods of rest or lower-intensity exercise.

Bodyweight Exercises: A zero-cost way to fitness! No equipment is needed for bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, burpees, and planks. These exercises can be done anywhere, making them perfect for outdoor workouts.

Flexibility and Mobility: Don’t forget to include flexibility and mobility exercises in your routine to improve range of motion and prevent injury. Yoga, stretching, and foam rolling are beneficial for maintaining flexibility and reducing muscle stiffness. Here’s an awesome list you can check out.

But What If I Suffer from Back Pain?

For those dealing with back pain, it’s crucial to approach spring fitness with care and consideration for your body’s needs. Start with low-impact exercises that strengthen the core and support the spine, such as swimming, walking, or gentle yoga. Focus on maintaining proper posture during workouts and avoid high-impact activities that may exacerbate discomfort. Incorporating regular stretching and foam rolling sessions to improve flexibility and alleviate tension in the back muscles can also be beneficial. Listen to your body, take breaks when needed, and consult with a healthcare professional or a certified trainer for personalized guidance on managing back pain while staying active during the springtime.

Questions About a Fitness Regimen or Treatment Plan if You Have Chronic Back Pain?

If chronic back pain persists or worsens despite these precautions, seeking professional help from a chiropractor or physical therapist may be necessary. These healthcare professionals can assess your condition, identify underlying issues (bulging disk, spinal stenosis, arthritis of the spine, herniated disk, sciatica, etc) , and develop a personalized treatment plan to address your specific needs. Remember, prioritizing your health and well-being is paramount, and seeking expert guidance can pave the way for a pain-free and fulfilling springtime fitness journey.

Massage therapists routinely treat people to relieve tight muscles from stress. Not only is massage excellent relaxation therapy, but medical evidence supports using massage therapy in injury rehabilitation.

Health care has included massage therapy for thousands of years. Human structure and conditions, like musculoskeletal injuries, pregnancies, stress, and disease, are affected by muscle tone and conditioning.

Studies have indicated that consistently applied force on injured muscles squeezes inflammation-causing cells from the muscles. The results of the controlled circumstances in the studies showed muscle regeneration and reduced tissue scarring were significant.

There are many techniques for massage therapy. When a medical professional provides a diagnosis for their patient, the therapist can use the appropriate massage technique to support the recommended rehabilitation path.

Examples of conditions could be Runner’s Knee, torn rotator cuffs, whiplash, sciatica, sports injuries, automobile accident injuries, or work-related injuries.

Another factor in determining the type of massage therapy applied would be a patient’s medical conditions. Knowing if a patient has heart or blood pressure issues, anxiety, depression, or previous injuries is all pertinent information for treatment.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage can help release muscle knots. It uses a combination of kneading, flowing strokes in the direction of the heart, passive joint movement, and circular motions.

Swedish massage can be a supportive treatment for low back, neck, and shoulder injuries. Studies indicate the relief may be temporary but effective when combined with exercise.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage uses more pressure than Swedish massage. The massage therapist will use deep finger pressure to relieve tension in the connective tissue and the deepest layers of muscle.

Research on Deep Tissue massage suggests the technique may help with recovery by improving circulation to reduce swelling, reduce the buildup of fluid around the injury, improve the range of motion and reduce pain and stiffness in the affected joints.

Deep tissue massage

Sports Massage

Massage therapists apply sports massage to the entire body or injured area. The therapist may use different pressures or strokes depending on the injury and limb stretching techniques.

Limb stretching during sports massage can be beneficial to increase flexibility and range of motion of the joints. Sports massage can lower an athlete’s stress levels, increase blood flow and relieve muscle tension. All these factors lead to improved injury rehabilitation.

Reflexology and Shiatsu Massage

Massage therapists use Reflexology and Shiatsu to relax or restore energy levels. The therapist will apply firm pressure on different pressure points on the hands, feet, and ears in Reflexology, and Shiatsu works the whole body.

These two forms of massage can improve a person’s recovery from injury by affecting their internal energy system. There is limited research, but studies have found that shiatsu massage can complement standard injury treatment for low back pain.

Reflexology massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a gentle massage to move lymphatic fluids through the body. Because it removes toxins and improves circulation, lymphatic drainage massage can be helpful in the healing process of many conditions.

Rehabilitation specialists often use Ice, compression, and elevation, which are effective therapies, but manual lymphatic drainage promotes more effective edema reduction after an injury.

Massage therapy has its place in the world of injury rehabilitation. Assembling an appropriate team of health and wellness providers can and will provide the best possible treatments for each individual, and remaining open to the possibilities can be life-altering for them.

I’d like to talk to you about sciatica, what causes it and what can be done about it.

There are several causes of sciatica. The sciatic nerve is about as big as your pinky and runs all the way down from your low back down your leg, to your toes. When this nerve is pinched or being impeding some way, the pain it causes is called sciatica.

The sciatic nerve can be pinched or impeded in several different areas along that route to your foot. The first area where it can be pinched is in the lower back itself. This can happen because of degeneration of the spine or the discs–remember, they’re the shock absorbers of your spine start to wear out. As they get thinner and thinner, there’s less space for the nerves to exit out. If they run out of space, those nerves can be pinched and can cause pain running down both legs, not just one side or the other. Also if the vertebra in the area are misaligned, or if there’s an accident that cause a lot of inflammation, this can also cause pain that runs down the leg. So sciatica can come from degeneration in the spine or disc herniation which is similar to rupture.

sciatica can be debilitating

The other area sciatica can come from is from your piriformis muscle. Some of you may have heard of this muscle. It goes from your hip to your tailbone and it connects those two bones. It also helps when turning your foot in and out. The piriformis muscle can go into spams for various reasons. Sometimes it starts to go into spasm because it’s trying to compensate for weak muscles surrounding it. If the muscles have become weakened due to lack of use in the butt area, the piriformis muscle starts to tighten up. The sciatic nerve passes either directly below or sometimes through the piriformis muscles so when piriformis muscle the tightens up, it goes into spasms, it can pinch the sciatic nerve in that spot and cause pain all the way down the leg. Sciatic nerve pain can be completely debilitating to the point where someone can’t walk, can’t think, can’t concentrate–it can be very, very painful and can stop a person doing their activities at work, at home, at school, or wherever they may be.

When somebody comes to us with sciatica we do a very thorough examination and diagnostic test to find out what is causing it. We can’t treat someone or tell someone we can fix their problem until we know where the pain is coming from.

Once we know what’s causing it, we can offer appropriate recommendations. Our recommendations might include physical therapy to stretch that muscle and strengthen the ones around it, it might also include a trigger point injection right into that muscle to get it to relax–that provides some immediate relief. And we might recommend decompression for the spine as we separate those discs and vertebrae, to open up that space it’s going to take that pressure off that nerve and the patient will feel a lot better and it’s also going to help rehydrate those discs.

Everett Chiropractic Adjustments, Snohomish County

We also may probably recommend chiropractic adjustment, just to make sure the bones and joints are moving properly and freely like they should. There are a lot of other treatments we can do such as cold laser, Graston Techniques, ultrasound, muscle therapy, like massage and other types of injections. But we don’t know what’s going to be the best for our patient until we are able to properly evaluate them. Please contact us at 425-347-8614 to schedule an appointment today. We are located in Everett, nearby Mukilteo, Marysville and Lynnwood.
The post What is Sciatica and What Can be Done About It? first appeared on Everett Spine & Rehab.

You may have heard this term thrown around and you know it has to do something with back pain–“sciatic.” But what exactly is sciatica? If someone says, they have sciatica, they’re referring to the pain associated with their sciatic nerve. It’s not a condition itself, but a symptom of an underlying condition. The sciatic nerve is a major never that runs from the lower back, through the buttocks and down each leg. Hallmark symptoms of sciatic include pain in your lower back (lumbar), buttocks, hips and legs as well as tingling, and numbness in the lower extremities. People with sciatica may experience mild pain to severe pain. Some people may even describe their sciatica as a really bad leg cramp.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve gets irritated. But how exactly does it get irritated? The most common cause of sciatic is a herniated or slipped disc. This very common condition occurs when a spinal disk that sits between your vertebrae, slips out of place. It may also be caused by degenerative disc disease (osteoarthritis of the spine) and lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).
